The player the red lanterns are facing will be first player. Then, give each player a lantern card of the color facing them.
Now for game play. You have to do these in order. First, you can exchange a lantern card. To do this, you need two favor tokens. Secondly, you can make a dedication.
You can only make one dedication a turn. The red dedication requires 4 of the same color lanterns. Blue requires 3 pairs of different colors.
The green dedication requires one of each color lantern. When you turn in cards, they go back to the table in the correct pile.
Lastly, you must place a lake tile. You select a lake tile from your hand and place it next to a tile on the table.

Christensen Top Contributor: Board Games. Lanterns is an abstract tile-placement game with wide appeal.
It's essentially a set-collector in which you trade in combinations of colored cards to score points. Each color has a unique pattern to assist with color-blind players.
You acquire certain colors of cards by placing tiles in a particular orientation, adjacent to other tiles. Sides of adjacent tiles don't have to match, but if they do you receive extra cards.
Very easy to learn and play, and you'll finish a game in about minutes per player. Easy as it is to play, strategy fans will find enough depth to consider Lanterns a midweight game.
Point values for particular sets of cards diminish as the game progresses. For example, the first time a player trades in 4-of-a-kind, they will receive more points than the third player to do it.
The market for each type of card is limited. Cards in possession are not hidden from other players. A particular orientation of a tile you place might give you a color you want, but also give another player a card that enables them to complete a set.
The art design is pleasant, meant to represent a top-down view onto a lake during an evening fireworks display the starting tile shows a person in a rowboat.
The wooden favor tokens are stamped in red with kanji that I can't read, but probably matches some hipster's inner-arm tattoo.
The non-textured cards are average quality, and they are frequently handled. Consider sleeving them if you will play often. Handle the cardboard tiles carefully to avoid tearing the graphics on the back, since unlike the cards, the tiles in your hand are hidden.
Another game that I really enjoy which I find similar to Lanterns is Splendor. Both have a small footprint, a limited market that replenishes, shorter length of play, scales well from players, very few rules to grok, but with an economy of decisions that subtly affect the final outcome.
This must be done before any other part of your turn and gives you the ability to collect that one missing card from a set. Gameplay continues around the table in this fashion until the last lake tile is collected, at which time each player will receive a final turn.
Points from dedication tokens are tallied and the player with the highest number of points wins the game. Ties are resolved by the player with the highest number of favor tokens.
In a further tie, the player with the highest number of lantern cards remaining wins. Only a few things detract from this game, and none of them have to do with the actual gameplay.
The tiles themselves are sturdy and well made, but as you can see from some of the photos above, the edges are starting to chip off and peel.
The second issue is the insert. Hot gluing 4 foam core pieces made all the difference. Again, this is something that can easily be resolved in future printings should they care to do so.
To begin, players set the starting Lake tile the one with the image of a boat in the center in the center of the table so that each edge is oriented toward one of the players.
The Dedication scoring tiles are also placed to the side in stack by color in descending order with the highest value tile on top. Each player draws 3 Lake tiles to their hand and the rest of the Lake tiles are placed in a face down stack to the side.
The number of Lake tiles used in a game also depends on the number of players. Each player also collects a lantern tile corresponding to the color on the starting Lake tile facing their direction to begin the game.
Each stack of Dedication tiles specifies the type of set needed to claim a tile. The options are: Four of a Kind 4 of same color , Three Pair 2 each of any 3 different colors , and Seven Unique 1 of every color.
Lanterns: The Harvest Festival is a set collection game, where players add tiles to an ever-growing lake in order to claim the titular Lantern cards.
By collecting certain sets of different cards, a player can gain points by showing his or her Dedication to the craft. Will you be the most dedicated and honorable artisan?
There are only a few different kinds of components to keep track of in Lanterns. First and foremost are the Lantern cards, which come in 7 different colors orange, green, purple, white, blue, red, and black , 8 of each.
Then there are Lake tiles, which show lanterns of one of the seven colors on each of the four edges, and occasionally have a platform in the middle depicting symbols like dragons, pandas, flowers, or fish.
Then there are three varieties of dedication tokens in varying values, which will be described later, and finally there are several round Favor tokens which depict the Chinese character for collecting or gathering.
To set up the game, separate the Lantern cards by color, and also separate the Dedication tokens and arrange them in stacks of descending value.Lanterns is an absolutely wonderful board game for families of all ages. The simplicity of play makes it easy for kids to understand and enjoy. Yet there’s also a level of strategy that adults can enjoy as well. And all age groups will enjoy the cool, colorful lake of lanterns that . 10/5/ · Lanterns: The Harvest Festival is a player game from Renegade Games. It doesn’t actually say the festival is for the emperor, but I just assumed it was due to all the other stuff we’ve done for him. This game is a set collection and tile placement game. It uses tokens, tiles, and cards. The game comes in a medium sized box. 1/17/ · Lanterns is a marvelous game. It’s beautiful, with fantastic illustrations, bright colors, and sturdy, well-made components; but Lanterns isn’t just a pretty face. Because of the hand limit you have to constantly monitor your cards (and your opponents cards) to make sure you’ll be able to trade for your desired dedication token before someone snatches it from you.
