Beer isn't free...

Another sad aspect of the Micron layoffs…

Walmart and St. Luke’s are now the state’s largest employers.

I’d suspect that in the not too distant future Walmart will set itself apart from St. Luke’s and seal its place as the state’s largest empoyer.

And it’s probably safe to assume that Walmart employing the most Idahoans does not bode well for the state’s economic future.

Happy Thanksgiving

Make sure you read this from Boise Weekly’s Rachel Daiglehere is an excerpt:

These days, after spending a few lonely Thanksgivings in far-flung
corners of the world, I see things differently. I don’t thank some
unknown force or being for what I have. And I don’t do it simply to
skip faster to the eating. These days I know what hunger looks like.
I’ve seen starving children in Cambodia, Bolivia, Fiji, Morocco …
I’ve given them food and money, knowing that no matter what I do, the
next day their battles begin anew.

This morning, I had a driveway moment with NPR in the parking lot outside BW’s
offices. I sat in the car listening to a story filed from Zimbabwe
about the country’s current food shortage. Some people are so desperate
for food, they’re plucking undigested bits of corn from animal dung,
washing it off and grinding it up to eat.

It’s a real problem that the imaginary Super Turkey and his team cannot
solve. Nor can you, as real as you may be. But rather than give thanks
in some vague and insubstantial way, really mean it this year. After
all, you’re sitting down to a feast, not a handful of dung-covered
corn.

—Rachael Daigle

Don’t forget while we’re over hear stuffing our faces and watching football (I’m just as guilty as the next guy), some people are starving and others are killing each other for no good reason.

It’s just another day where humans murder each other because someone isn’t of the right religion, or someone wants some guy’s jacket, or someone was insulted or any other host of reasons we use to slaughter each other on a day to day basis.

It’s amusing, because nowadays we like to kid ourselves that collectively we’ve somehow evolved beyond the knuckle dragging apes of our genetic forefathers — when in reality, collectively we’re still vicious, territorial and vindictive animals.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving, we’ll be enjoying ours.

Yay for the economy!

Idaho Statesman:

Micron to lay off 15 percent of workforce, Otter pledges help to laid-off workers

Micron Technology says it will cut its global work force by 15 percent during the next two years, with most of the cuts in Boise.

The Boise computer-memory chip maker said it will stop making flash memory in Boise for its joint venture with Intel Corp. The shutdown comes in response to falling prices for NAND flash memory. Micron says prices have fallen “significantly below manufacturing costs.”

Micron didn’t say exactly how many people would lose their jobs. The company employs about 9,000 workers in Boise. A 15 percent cut would be roughly 1,350 workers.

Right now I have to use two hands to count how many friends, acquaintances and family have been laid off or forced to work reduced hours in the last 4 months. The economy isn’t tanking though… oh no… this is just another nefarious plot by the libural media to damage the Republican brand.

Thank God all those tax breaks we’ve given Albertsons/SuperValu, Micron and HP have paid off! If this Valley loses its technology work force — we’re going to be in for a world of hurt.

KTVB viewers speak out on Swindell

And the consensus is full of awesomeness.

Everyone can let out a sigh of relief

Brandi Swindell wasn’t tortured, sent to a reeducation camp, brutalized or otherwise martyred*. The Chinese authorities put Swindell on an airplane and are shipping her back to the States.

I fully expect an entourage of Idaho reporters to meet her at the airport when she returns so that we will all know about her story of extreme sacrifice.

*Not that the Chinese don’t do that when there are no cameras around.

It sounds like the worst thing that happend to them was that they were fed KFC.

Swindelled in China

Detained again(no media yet, just a release on Brandi’s blog) KTVB:

Brandi Arrested 2nd Time for Prayer

Three Americans Dragged by Police from Tiananmen Square — Public Prayer Deemed Illegal Demonstration

The Americans were arrested for the second time — It is not known when the human rights leaders will be released

[...]

The same three Americans were also arrested yesterday while holding a banner and speaking out against China’s religious persecution.

While in custody Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition, said, "We were in Tiananmen Square publicly praying for the people of China when police forcefully dragged us across the street."

Note the terminology; "arrested for the second time", if you weren’t arrested the first time, how can you be arrested for the second time? In the first video you can also hear Swindell say that they were "detained", not arrested. Also notice Mahoney’s quote "we were…publicly praying", if you watch their own videos you’ll note that he was screaming at the people passing by when the police finally confronted them. Before that you can actually see some police march by the protesters with hardly a glance.

I will say that just because they were shouting like the obnoxious media hounds that they are is not reason to be detained. They have the right to act like that, I fully support that. Why I find these people despicable is that they blatantly lie about what they are doing. They aren’t honest at all.

It is good and all that they are trying to raise awareness about what is going on in China, but it’s pretty clear the only reason they are there now is because there are cameras there. Why haven’t they ever protested in China before? Are they afraid of actually being tossed in a cell when the cameras aren’t there? Why haven’t they ever gone to the middle east to protest the oppression of women there? I think it is also pretty clear that they didn’t get the repression they wanted the first day, so they probably upped the ante for the second protest.

Videos down below.

Swindell detained in China

Don’t really have much to say about this except I’m glad Brandi found a cause that’s a little more important than keeping a hunk of rock in a public park.

Updated:

I take that back, I do have something so say. Swindell is many things, but she is not a "human rights leader". Leave it to her to put some self-aggrandizing on her website and in her press release. Kudos to the Statesman for not reprinting that tripe in their story on the incident.

News vs. editorial pages

Kevin Richert of the Idaho Statesman responds to bloggers responding to Popkey’s column yesterday, I also responded there as well. Respond.

Check it out if you’re into that sorta thing — nothing like some interweb newsygeekybloggers drama for a Friday afternoon.

Wait, what… is that the sun shining outside?

Additional thoughts

I think one of the reasons that this case is pretty fascinating to me is that there are many perspectives to this one story:

  • Homosexuality
  • Censorship in the library
  • Online anonymity (most users)
  • Online anonymity (public officials)
  • Media coverage of local stories
  • The power of a small group to enact policy that affects the community as a whole

I’m sure I’ll have some additional thoughts on some of these perspectives as the days wear on — whisperings would dictate there is still more to come of this.

Then we can get back to important things like beer, food and tunes.

Bruce Skaug resigning from the Library Board

I just found out from a comment and via phone confirmation with the Mayor’s office that Bruce Skaug is resigning his position on the Nampa Public Library Board effective July 1st.

This after Mr. Skaug left an anonymous comment on this site degrading citizens of Nampa and accusing fellow residents of having a "messed up view of sex", i.e. one that isn’t the same as his.

I’ll update as I find out more.

Updated

Idaho Press-Tribune story here.

Skaug told the Idaho Press-Tribune today that he submitted his
resignation Monday to Nampa Mayor Tom Dale. Skaug said he had
accomplished what he wanted to accomplish on the board and that was
part of his reason for resigning.

What’s the other part of the reason? Hmm.

Update II

Idaho Statesman story on Skaug’s stepping down. I wonder what you have to do in order to have the local media carry water for you? It’s not like it is difficult to ask a simple question. It’s also not hard to see the real reason why he stepped down.

Frankly, it’s pretty disturbing to see the local media not report the real story — it makes you wonder just how much they hold back on the really important stories — so as to not offend those in charge. The fact that they are providing cover for Skaug really makes you question how they reported the library board story in the first place.

Yeah, but will anything happen?

Wake me up when we have actual oversight in our state government and someone in a high place actually does some actual time.

KTVB:

Whistleblower: Tax Commission gave companies big breaks

BOISE - A veteran state Tax Commission auditor Wednesday released a 17-page whistleblower report alleging that agency commissioners for years have improperly settled tax protests by large corporations, saving the companies money but shorting Idaho by millions of dollars.

Stan Howland, a corporate income tax auditor for the tax collection agency for 28 years, said the four appointed members of the Tax Commission, as well as the deputy attorneys general who advise them, routinely allow largely out-of-state corporations to pay just a percentage of what they really owe.
