Beer isn't free...

Tators on the grill and el gato niños

Mowed the yard, had some really good beers, listened to some really good music and grilled some grub.

Spring, is indeed finally here which means the gatos are ready for the sun.

Snow in the mountains

Had to run up the hill yesterday to throw some grass seed down in preparation for this summer.

And one of the now defunct Tamarack Resort — say good-bye ski lifts.

Another thing that I love about Idaho is that we can drive 2 hours to the north and require jeans and a jacket, but then come home and change into shorts and flip flops (yesterday at least).

We had lunch at Kit’s Riverside Restaurant in Horseshoe Bend, I meant to take a picture of their monster burgers but I was starving and forgot all about until it was too late. If you’ve never been there I suggest stopping by when you’re headed up north sometime, or just take a cruise out to Horseshoe Bend some wild weekend. When you’re coming into town from the south it’s on the righthand side of the road just after you cross the bridge. They have a decent selection of beers (for Horseshoe Bend) on tap, good burgers and fries.

Treasure Valley unemployment numbers

Pretty slick feature from the NY Times.

Some local numbers: Canyon County is sitting at 8.9%, a 5% increase from last year. Ada County is sitting at 6.3% a 3.7% increase from last year. Gem County is at 9%, a one year increase of 4.9%.

More troubling is that there are several Northern Idaho counties that have unemployment rates over 10%, including Clearwater County which has a 13.6% unemployment rate.

And more than likely it will only get worse before it gets better.

Another sad aspect of the Micron layoffs…

Walmart and St. Luke’s are now the state’s largest employers.

I’d suspect that in the not too distant future Walmart will set itself apart from St. Luke’s and seal its place as the state’s largest empoyer.

And it’s probably safe to assume that Walmart employing the most Idahoans does not bode well for the state’s economic future.

Just heard on Idaho Talks Live…

“Liberals are the racists. I’m not a racist, I have negro and Mexican friends.”

Idaho slays me sometimes.

VP Biden in Boise

You can check out live video at KTVB.com or if you’re videoless you can get minute-by-minute tweets that KTVB is posting.

Doesn’t Tom Luna have more important things to do today?

Biden will be late…

…and Minnick isn’t going to make it to Boise for the Special Olympics.

Here is Rep. Minnick’s statement:

“I very much regret not being able to attend the World Special Olympics Winter Games today with Vice President Biden,” Idaho Congressman Walt Minnick said. “My duties in the U.S. House of Representatives kept me in Washington, D.C., but I’m glad to know the visit is shining even more positive attention on such a fantastic event. The Games have been great for Idaho, and I am pleased that Vice President Biden will today get to see great performances which are representative of so many wonderful athletes, coaches and volunteers.”

It’s Monday…

…so that means it’s hate on immigrants day for 670 KBOI’s Idaho Talks Live.

It amazes me that people think that immigrants should be able to learn a whole new language in a matter of months. I mean, a lot of times we are talking about people who have a very poor education to start off with, let alone trying to learn a new language in their later years. It takes time to learn a new language, it’s one thing to be able to converse in a new language, but it’s a whole ‘nother thing to be able to understand and fill out government or financial paperwork. Hell, we’re partly in this economic crisis because most Americans didn’t understand basic math and didn’t know how to read their mortgage paperwork.

I know a few Hispanics who are first generation Americans, one, born in Mexico and immigrated with his parents when he was about 10, 12… right now he’s got a better command of the English language than most native born Americans. His parents? They still need help with some things, e.g., taxes, buying a home, car etc… but they are learning English. I’ll also note that his younger brother is currently in the Army and served a combat tour in Iraq and is getting ready to head back for another.

You always hear the argument that “my parents came from Germany, or Italy or whatever and they learned English”, well yeah, but I bet they didn’t do it in a few months. My guess would be that it took a generation or so before their families became fluent in English. Maybe here it just seems more prevalent because of the amount of immigrants condensed into a smaller area but it’s disingenuous to say that no immigrants are trying to learn English.

Will immigrants still speak their native tongue? Sure, just like they still do in the Little Italy’s, Koreatowns or Chinatowns in any of America’s larger cities.

I’ve got a family member who teaches ESL at an area school and she’ll tell you that some of those kids are busting their butts to learn English and doing what they can to get an education — they know what the alternative is. It’s naive and presumptuous to assume that all immigrants aren’t trying to learn English.

Are there immigrants who don’t want to take the time to learn English? Sure, just like there are Americans who don’t want to take the time to learn English or even get a basic education. Does that mean we shun them away or kick them out of the country? People also have to realize that some immigrants aren’t here for the long haul, they’ll stay for a couple of years and head back home. Do they really need to learn the complete ins-and-outs of English? Or should they pick up what they need to get by? If you ask me, this just makes it more obvious that we need a guest worker program.

Sometimes it seems that people don’t want to give others the benefit of the doubt or a chance simply because of the color of their skin, not because of their language.

Damn the snow

…and here I thought we were on our way to spring.

VP Biden coming to Boise

Pretty nifty…

Mayor Bieter was just on my teevee telling me it’s so.

Speaking of Bieter, how many more terms as the Mayor of Boise does he have to do until we get the chance to call him Governor Bieter?

How much you wanna bet?

That this email will be/is circulating on state, county or city owned computers in Idaho?

Subject: FW: Amazing!

I’m confused

How can 2,000,000 blacks get into Washington, DC in 1 day in sub zero temps when 200,000 couldn’t get out of New Orleans in 85 degree temps with four days notice?

The official, later sent out another apologetic email wondering if; “they were going to be allowed to keep their sense of humor”. The Florida Republican Committewoman could potentially lose her job.

One thing is for sure, I bet Canyon County Commish Steve Rule won’t be making that mistake again.

Another thought on Idaho drivers

They’ll drive 10-under on a 55mph or 65mph stretch of road just to hold up traffic because they can, but they’ll be damned if the government is going to tell them to slow down in a school zone.

3 cases in point just today.

Yeah, about those animal cruelty laws

This is just beyond sick.

Caldwell cat found with arrow through head gets help from clinic, rescue group

A female tabby that has understandably named “Arrow” awaits surgery at WestVet in Garden City after being found with an arrow stuck through the cat’s left eye and out the back of its skull.

A cat found in Caldwell with an arrow through its head was likely the victim of an act of cruelty, according to the director of a cat rescue group that plans to help the cat recover and find a new home.

The cat will undergo surgery Wednesday afternoon at WestVet Emergency & Specialty Center in Garden City to have the arrow removed. It’s lodged in one of the cat’s eyes and sticking out the back of its head.

“This was not an accident,” said Sheri Schneider, executive director of Simply Cats in West Boise. “I think this cat had to have been held down. This person was a great shot to get it right through the eye. Either the cat was held down or tied down, is my personal feeling.”

[...]

Remember, Idaho is one of the 5 worst states in the union for animal anti-cruelty laws.

At least the cat was taken to WestVet, she couldn’t be in better hands. While we normally do all of our cat dr-in’ at Kindness in Nampa, WestVet has been instrumental in saving the lives of two of our cats.

Updated:

It was a 12-year-old kid.

It was an accident, just trying to shoo the cat away. Uh huh.

Ah, that explains it then…

So, I’m at the store today picking up some goods (see above), I’m standing in line at the checkout when the theft alarms go off at the Nampa Fred Myer’s. An older gentleman walks by me and comments that it sounds like he’s in a casino, and he just hit the jackpot.

I said, “I wouldn’t know, I never win at the slots — lady luck will only sit with me at the card tables”. He then proceeded to go out on a limb and tell me how the casinos are a money making racket, now as I was thinking to myself “really? well, I’ll be damned” he then jumped further into the reaches of conspiracy…

You see the Powerball is rigged. Yep, all the money that people spend on tickets goes straight into the government coffers and no one ever really wins. I guess my face silently told him that I must have an example. He then offered up this story; his friend won $200,000 in the Powerball but didn’t receive any of the payouts and he was forced to sign an agreement saying he wouldn’t tell anyone that he didn’t get any money. Those people that are holding the big checks after a big win are really state employees — not joyous lottery-winning-citizens.

I couldn’t help but think to myself on the way out of the store that this is one of the reasons this state is so screwed when it comes to politics. The tin-hattery of vast government fleecings and cover-ups run coarsely through the veins of a significant bloc of voters in Idaho — hence we’re stuck with the Thayn’s, Schaefer’s and McKague’s.

He was right about one thing though; the food in Jackpot is vastly overpriced.
