Saturday morning we went out to grab most of the starts for our garden, luckily for us one of the best greenhouses in the Valley is only about 2 miles away.

Canyon Bounty Farms has a very impressive array of tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, eggplants, herbs and all kinds of peppers. Everything is organic, well taken care of and most importantly, local. Really an awesome place. If you’re in Canyon County and have a garden you really have to check them out.
You can find the full list of what they produce on their website.

Pretty slick feature from the NY Times.
Some local numbers: Canyon County is sitting at 8.9%, a 5% increase from last year. Ada County is sitting at 6.3% a 3.7% increase from last year. Gem County is at 9%, a one year increase of 4.9%.
More troubling is that there are several Northern Idaho counties that have unemployment rates over 10%, including Clearwater County which has a 13.6% unemployment rate.
And more than likely it will only get worse before it gets better.
I84 at Garrity 8:30 this morning.
Granted, there was a wreck this morning, but it looks similar to this on non-wreck days. Also, it looked a lot worse at 7:45 or so, I had some running around to do before I got a chance to snap this photo — the radio was saying it was an hour drive from Garrity to the WYE.

Idaho should have bit the bullet and put in 4 lanes from Nampa to Meridian and 3 lanes to Caldwell. It’s going to cost a hell of a lot more when we have to do it in 10 years anyway.
We need to get into the habit of planning for the future, not just trying to make up for past planning mistakes.
One gripe I had about the Idaho Statesman and the Idaho Press-Tribune endorsing Rep. Steve Kren (Nampa, 13B) was that they both acknowledged his weak performances as an appointed two-term representative. Everyone knew that Kren, after two sessions still had a lot to learn, he was still behind the curve.
There was talk about letting him learn the ropes, but that more was expected of him in the 2009 and 2010 legislative sessions.
Well, Nampa, you get what you vote for — while we should have dedicated lifelong educator Byron Yankey representing Nampa in the legislature when Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Luna is planning to slash the education budget. Instead we have a representative doing his own bidding and the bidding for big Idaho lobbyists.

Personally, I think that this was a good choice — intelligent, pragmatic and most importantly, a moderate.
There should be a caveat however, and that is there needs to be clear and full disclosure about Skip’s lobbying interests in the Idaho legislature.
Melinda Smyser, Sid Freeman or Rep. Carlos Bilbao — in that order.
If you had your money on Smyser as I did, I’d suggest seeing if the bookie will let you up the ante.
It’s Dave Young’s last day as Canyon County Prosecutor.
This fact will make a lot, a lot of Canyon County residents very happy indeed.
- Robert Vasquez has a poll on his website asking which office he should run for; I voted “none”. Not only does the gentleman from Canyon County still think our nation is on the brink of collapse, he also doesn’t know how to spell Barack Obama’s name. He is apparently thinking of being the first to throw his hat into the clown circus that is known as the GOP 1st CD primary. Lordy-Lordy I love me a good GOP primary in Idaho.
Great list from Dave Krick of Bittercreek and Red Feather via The Boise Co-op’s website.
Beth Rasgorshek of Canyon Bounty Farms gets a mention at #6 on the list. I talk to Beth several times throughout the spring and summer, the woman is an amazing resource for knowledge about local veggies and herbs — dare I say she is probably one of most well-versed farmers in the area.
Somehow I knew that this would make its rounds around the country… just one more embarrassment for Idaho.
Does anyone expect anything different coming out of Canyon County?

"People who give Idaho a bad rep."
Oy, another day another incident from Idaho that will surely make its rounds around the internet — I mean, seriously, how hard is it to adhere to protocol when using your taxpayer funded government email account?
New West Boise:
Commissioner Sends Racist Email Using Official Account Why aren’t our leaders outraged?
Canyon County Commissioner Steve Rule used his government email account to distribute an email on Dec. 2 comparing Michelle Obama to a poisonous black widow spider.
NewWest.Net/Boise obtained a paper copy of the email and has confirmed it was sent electronically. According to its header, Rule received the email as a forward, then used his official county email address to forward it to 26 people, including many at their Canyon County government email accounts.

Idaho Press-Tribune editor Vickie Holbrook sounds off about Canyon County commishes here (literally sounds off, includes a sound bite).
Richert:
Fighting Big Government … Canyon County style
Our Vision for the Valley editorial project is built on the premise that community leaders need to work together on common goals — even if it means giving up a little control in the process.
As such, I’ve become a little less patient with parochial squabbling: county vs. county, city vs. city. But I can sympathize with the Ada County officials who accuse their Canyon County colleagues of foot-dragging on vehicle emissions testing.
[...]
I know some Canyon County residents think emissions testing represents government intrusion. But this list makes it clear: If we’re going to address air quality, the government is going to be involved in doing it. Any question about that?
You see, some Canyon County residents don’t want to do emissions testing on their jacked up 4×4’s and antiquated vehicles because that equals big government intrusion into their lives. No, the Conservatives that make up a significant portion of Canyon County only want government intrusion when it fits their narrow life view.
- Two people of the same sex want to get married? That’s for the government to decide.
- Drinking on the Lord’s day? That’s for the government to decide.
- Women having freedom over their bodies? That’s for the government to decide.
- Want to make your own decisions about assisted suicide? That’s for the government to decide.
- The list goes on and on…
One of the biggest frustrations that I have with Conservatives is that they continually crow about the intrusion of big government into their lives, and yet they are more than willing to use it to control the lives of others.
God forbid that Canyon County residents have to get emissions testing done on their vehicles — even when more Canyon County residents commute to Ada for work than Ada residents commute to Canyon for pleasure or work combined.
Most of Canyon County’s Republican delegation has yet to turn in their 30 day post-general campaign finance reports which are due today.
Sure would be nice if they could go ahead and comply with the Secretary of State’s rules so we can have a look-see and find out where all that bundled out-of-state dough went.
Updated Fri. Dec. 5th.
The Idaho Press-Tribune reports that all Canyon County Republicans had their reports turned in on Thursday.
Baby steps:
Booze to flow in Canyon Co. on Sundays
NAMPA - Hard alcohol will soon be served on Sundays in Canyon County.
The Canyon County Commission gave the green light for the sales during a Monday morning meeting. Currently wine and beer are available for sale, but distilled spirits like vodka and gin have long been outlawed in Idaho’s second-largest county.
Several people showed up to the meeting to speak against passage of the ordinance, citing the possibility of increased DUI rates and cost to the county, but the commission ultimately voted to approve.
It’s not about being able to drink on Sundays, it’s about having the freedom to choose. Government should not be able do dictate when an adult chooses to enjoy a drink, whether it is on someone’s religious day or not.
What’s always irked me about Conservatives is that they are all about keeping government out of their own lives, but they are more than happy to use government to control the lives of others. This is why I’ve always appreciated the stance of Libertarians (if you can get past the gold standard and black helicopter conspiracy theories) — I think it’s safe to say that most Libertarians are "conservative" they at least believe in keeping government, for the most part out of everyone’s lives, not just their own.
People abuse their freedom, you punish them, you know, that whole personal responsibility thingy that always seems to get overlooked in today’s society.
Yeah, I can totally see the Socialist Obama turning latte drinking, Birkenstock wearing, college kids into the "Assault Weapon Confiscation Corps." otherwise known as the AWCC.
The Idaho Press-Tribune:
‘People are afraid’
R.J. Fox, a manager at Al’s Pawn Shop in Caldwell, said sales at that shop have “skyrocketed” since the election. A recent shipment of 10,000 .223-caliber rounds sold before it had reached the floor, he said.
“People are afraid. They’re afraid of becoming socialist. They’re afraid of losing their rights,” Fox said. “That’s the big fear — the great unknown. (People) are drudging up their worst demons in their minds because we don’t know what we’re facing. We don’t know what to expect.”
My God some people are stupid and they really make Idaho look bad.
To be fair, the story also quotes a pawn shop owner from Nampa and he all but calls the people who are rushing out to buy firearms morons.
