Stromboli from The Flying Pie and Sockeye’s Triple Pie Ale. A salty, malty combo made in heaven. Fries, burgers and beer? I knew it wouldn’t be long until we checked this place out.
This time City Grill.
I can’t say much for City Grill because I never ate there, but I had heard good things about it. The owners of City Grill, Christine Reid and Mitchell Thompson also own Pair which is right down the street. I’ve been (ed. note; been, not beer Statesman readers) there a couple times and really dig it, they’ve got some pretty kick ass cocktails there. Let’s hope that at least Pair sticks around. On a side note – one thing I’ve always found amusing about the comment section on the Idaho Statesman’s website is whenever a restaurant closes down it is because it simply didn’t measure up to the impeccable palates of the commenters. Milky Way, Mortimer’s, Andrae’s… they were just weren’t up to par for the palates of Idaho’s Applebee’s loving foodies. Oy… A lot of good shows coming up in the City of Trees: Sunday Nov. 16th My Brightest Diamond @ The Neurolux. Monday Nov. 17th Vic Chesnutt and Elf Power @ The Neurolux. Also on Monday the 17th, one of my favorites; Old Crow Medicine Show will be @ the Knitting Factory. I’m really digging their new album "Tennessee Pusher". Wednesday Nov. 19th, two more of my favs; The Hold Steady and The Drive-By Truckers will be @ the Knitting Factory. Then on Thursday the 20th, some up-and-comers that I’m still on the fence about; Dead Confederate will be @ The Neurolux. …Talk about a post-election week where some tough decisions need to be made. What an awesome show; had I been able to indulge in more of that great Stone IPA that the Neurolux has on tap it would have been one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time. It was a late one though… and now I need to get to bed so I can head to the airport at 5 in the morning. Here is Cold War Kids and "We Used to Vacation" Byran Fischer, his ilk and half of the listenership of KBOI 670am could do themselves a favor and go see the Idaho Shakespeare Festival’s take on Greater Tuna — they could finally see how they sound to the rest of the Treasure Valley. The good news is that Kevin Settles of Bardenay says that once President Obama is in office things should turn back around. Ok, well, he didn’t say President Obama, but he did say that things should get better after the election. On the heels of all the news about more Downtown Boise restaurants shuttering their doors there is this from the Idaho Business Review:
Yay. I do think that Eagle road is trying to break some sort of record for having the most craptastic restaurants per square mile. I can’t comment on On The Border because I’ve never been to one, but Chili’s is right up there on my list of the worst chain restaurants (I put it ahead of only TGI Friday’s). KTVB had a story yesterday talking about the migration of some restaurants that have closed down their Downtown Boise operations and moved westward, like Gino’s Grill and Louie’s Restaurant (granted I don’t think you can call two a "trend"… yet). But the fact of the matter is it’s a hell of a lot cheaper to operate a restaurant outside of Downtown Boise, and I think as Downtown Boise becomes less of an attraction itself you’ll start to see more eateries migrate to the outer ‘burbs. As Downtown Boise became a destination is seems like some people got a little greedy (so a little birdie tells me) and lease and rent While I am definitely a fan of vibrant downtowns — I really like the idea of having a lot of your entertainment options centrally located — but mixed-use isn’t all that bad either. But as much as I would like to have my options centrally located; if With regards to my own town, I do hope that I get to see a vibrant downtown scene in Nampa during my lifetime. Right now it’s like a seedling trying its damnedest to break through the soil so it can get some sun to fully bloom. I waited for years just to have a place where I can sit at a table on the sidewalk and enjoy a drink. Just this past year that finally came to fruition with Market Limone. Now we just need some good bar grub and some decent taps. Of course, at this point we could get into some mass transit arguments. I know personally, my wife and I would go to Downtown Boise much more often if we had some transit options. Heck, it’d even be nice to have some transit options in Nampa so that one can imbibe and not have to worry about transportation. Idaho Statesman: "Satchel’s to be next Boise Downtown casualty" I saw this last week but didn’t get around to commenting on it, namely because I’d never been to Satchel’s. But it is worth noting that the owners from Satchel’s are laying the blame squarely on the shoulders of our dwindling economy. So we’re at 6 now; The Milky Way, Andrae’s, Mortimer’s, Gino’s Grill, 8th St. Wine Company, and now Satchels. And as I said last week, these are the ones that we know of. This time it is the 8th Street Wine Co. in BoDo. We were just there about 3 weeks ago, I didn’t think that it was the greatest place in the world, but I did enjoy it. I did hear a couple of weeks ago that Erik McLaughlin was shutting down the wine shop portion and adding that space to the restaurant, but I guess that didn’t work out. It is too bad that McLaughlin is taking off to Oregon too, he did a lot for the Idaho wine scene, really put an emphasis on Idaho wines. So what are we up to now? The Milky Way, Mortimer’s, Andrae’s and now Erik McLaughlin’s 8th Street Wine Co. And these are the places that make the news, who knows exactly how many places have paid the price for a shitty economy and the Treasure Valley’s lust for chain restaurants. BLOGS: BoiSee MEDIA: KTVB via Boise Weekly. If you’ve been following the on-going drama concerning the state of Downtown Boise’s dining scene make sure you check this out. It is a really good interview concerning Downtown Boise restaurants with BW’s Rachael Daigle, Andrae’s Chef Andrae Bopp, Chef John Berryhill of Barryhill & Co and a manager from the BoDo chain restaurant, Bonefish Grill. Speaking of, here is a interview of Andrae Bopp advocating the use of local ingredients from local farmers. I can’t really say much for TableRock, I haven’t been there in about two years or so — all I remember is that the food was so-so and the brew was so-so. But… it was a local brewery, so in that regard it is sad to see it perhaps going away. Communities needs options, and TableRock at least provided that for Boise imbibers.
Statesman brew-blogger Patrick Orr has more on his blog; The Beer Nut. Updated: Good news for imbibers; it looks like the brewpub and brewery are staying put. The filing was to separate those interests from a now closed bottling plant in Meridian. Yet another restaurant in Downtown Boise closing up shop.
The Milky Way, Mortimer’s and now Andrae’s have all closed up shop in a relatively short period of time in Downtown Boise — and these are just the big time places that we hear about. Also of importance; Gino’s Grill in Downtown Boise is not closing down, but moving to Eagle to be closer to its customer base. Gino’s namesake restaurant; Gino’s Ristorante is staying put for the time being, although I wouldn’t be surprised to see it move to Eagle as well sometime in the future. Frankly people need to start asking questions about the CCDC and whether or not their actions are having an effect on local eateries. … On a good note — the restaurant at Market Limone in Downtown Nampa is slated to open next week. I’ll have a bit more on that later. But just to tempt your taste buds right now… you can check out some pictures of a couple dishes here — Kurobuta pork chop with cornbread pudding, cherries jubilee and vanilla bourbon sauce… um, yum. KBCI:
At some point in time you’d hope that common sense would come into play here. It also might make ya wonder why the Treasure Valley Cab Co. w/ their orange Scions (and 4 liter engines) are kickin’ your ass. It might be time for you to sit down with the stretch Hummer limo guy and rethink your business plan. |
