Beer isn't free...

A Monday brew: Sierra Nevada’s Summerfest Lager

This is a summertime brew I look forward to each year.

There isn’t a lot to say about this beer, it is a typical pilsner, yet done Sierra Nevada style; fruity hops, great buttery mouthfeel with just a hint of pine and ever so slightly sweet. It’s light and airy with a lot of carbonation, pours with a snow white head that quickly dissipates and it had almost no lacing.

It’s not one of those crazy good beers, just a top notch summer brew for a hot summer day from one of the bigger micro breweries. This is one of those beers I’ll probably buy about 3 six packs of over the course of the summer, it’s “that” beer you pick up to take to a bbq, or to just sweetly imbibe on the patio with a book.

I went through six-pack of this last summer — I didn't think much of it. A little on the skunky side. Maybe I got a bad batch. I'll probably stick with other seasonals this summer . . .

  • I've always enjoyed this one, I didn't get much skunk from this bottle, so who knows.

Why I've got ya here; which summer seasonal do you go for? I already did my Wednesday brew, but the Friday slot is still open, I'll see if I can track it down for a review.

  • Come to think of it, I've not had this one and just earlier I was thinking of Sierra Nevada because I saw a picture of their Anniversary Ale earlier. I must say though, your patio beer pictures always look inviting. I don't know what it is…maybe the book casually open in the background, or that late afternoon light…or perhaps just the beer. Nonetheless, it looks great.

I'm a really big fan of Sam Adams Summer Ale, I always look forward to that one coming out. Its funny, saying you like Sam Adams almost sounds mainstream anymore. :) I also really dig Deschutes' Twilight Ale — that's a weird one, because the later into summer it gets, the more I like seem to like it.

  • Ha! That's funny, Sam Adams Summer was what I was debating with when I picked up the SN. They had it at the Nampa Fred Myer's.

  • I gotta say, I'm a patio person.

I love just hanging out on the patio listening to music, surfing the web, reading, having friends over, etc… etc…

Sam Adams Summer brew is usually pretty tasty. I really enjoyed Twilight Ale last year, it seems like it was particularly tasty, so will be interested in trying it when it returns. Still a little early yet to find all the summer beers that will eventually be available when it actually is summer. Hefs of all varieties are always good go-to summer beers.

  • Yeah, I was thinkin' it was early for the summer ales, but Freddy's had a couple of 'em so I figured I'd make 'em the theme for the week.

And with this 80+ temps… sheesh… it's almost like summer.

Yeah, yeah I know it's in the 80's right now, but you seem to have a perpetual habit of trying to jump the gun on the seasons. Looks like Spring is going to come back to join us later this week, so you may want to not break out the full line of filp flops and shorts just yet. Enjoy the summer brew for another day or two and then we'll look for some more of them around June, when most should become available.

  • Too late for that. Flip flops and shorts are the attire of choice! If it's above 50, it's shorts and flip flops.

I'm tryin' to not buttonhole myself into themes for the beers for the week but it's an easy system to fall into. I've already done another Summer Ale (Alaskan) for Wed, so I have to get one for Fri.

I think next week will be bocks; I have one that's been sittin' around for a while and then the the one you picked up for me.

Should be good, seems like a saw a spring bock somewhere that might fit the theme.

  • Yeah, looks like it. I picked up another bock at A New Vintage last week, so I'll have that in the mix, I'll be out and about today, probably look for another one to round out the week.
