This shall be a Drifter day…
- It’s only going to get worse before it gets better. The Boise School District to lay off 122 employees.
- OUCH. Idaho Statesman: In a crisis, Otter’s lack of vision is alarming.
- Rep. Dick Harwood apparently doesn’t understand the difference between a private business wasting time and a taxpayer funded body wasting time. Dick, these two things are not the same.
- Jesus, how much does a coach ticket cost? Idaho is only state to skip D.C. stimulus conference featuring VP Biden. Otter didn’t want to have to send an entourage, ok… fine, send just one person to represent Idaho. Let ‘em fly coach, take the bus when in DC and have ‘em stay at a Super 8.
- Kevin Richert in Statesman: The reluctant Keynesian?
- Gov. Otter to forgo housing stipend starting in April. That $4,000 dollar a month stipend. Granted he reduced it from $4,500 in order to show “solidarity” with Idahoans losing their jobs.
- Boise to regain a dueling piano bar. This time deep in BoDo.
- It is looking like Boise will have another beer festival this year. “The Big Beer Float” will be held at Ann Morrison Part on Aug. 8th-9th. I’m sure as the planning progresses more details will be released. It’s being put on by Rick Boyd owner of Boise’s Brewtopia Beer Market.
- Speaking of beer… Sierra Nevada To Release Kellerweis, a “traditional German hefeweizen with the Sierra Nevada twist”. I’m definitely going to have my eyes peeled for this. While I do prefer American style hefeweizens, but it’s Sierra Nevada, so it’s got a lot of potential to be great.
- I do apologize for the following taco-snobbery: Guy Hand (whose food reviews I love) does tacos in Eagle. Yet, he completely misses the point that a taco should have no more than 4 ingredients (protein, cilantro, something hot and lime), should fit in the palm of your hand, should cost no more than a dollar and the best ones are found in a truck or in a street stand. The taco is a sacred thing my friends — but not too sacred that you can’t know how to make one.
- This was kind of amusing to me because last night I was listening to Idaho (the band) and their album Hearts of Palm.

Beer festival in a park sounds good to me. Lets hope this one sticks. I'm tired of this on again, off again beer fest business here in Boise.
Sacred taco's? Tasty when done right to be sure, but sacred I'm not so sure about. At least he made it to Los Beto's. I'd say that's the next best thing to a truck.
Yeah, with some tweaking the Old Boise Brewer's fes could have been pretty great. It was nice to have one in the heart of downtown instead of out in the boonies like the one in IF (though, I got no complaints about Mountain Brewers').
Speaking of tacos… I think I know what is for lunch today.
Hey I've got a Chilango's truck nearby and you caused me to give it a try. But I ordered the burrito gut bomb special making me believe I don't know what I'm doing when I order. Pretty damn greasy. Give me a suggestion for better choices to make other than tacos.
Can't really, it depends on the truck. Some have good quesadillas, some don't. Some have good tamales, and some don't. Depends on the truck. I can't really speak for any of the burritos, I never get them — last time I ordered a burrito it was from the Los Betos in Twin Falls after a night in Jackpot — they are greasy gut bombs.
I follow the adage of sticking to what someone does best, which for taco trucks is tacos. Although I will get the quesadilla from time to time at the truck on Garrity in Nampa, it's pretty damn good. The truck in front of Fred Myers in Nampa has pretty good tamales too — I haven't had their quesadillas before, maybe I'll have to get that today instead. I'm just not a fan of gobs of greasy melted cheddar cheese.
I'll say this though… If you can find anything wrapped in banana leaves. Get it.
I know all about the banana leaves. Its hit and miss though since they really don't put the food on display and the guys manning the truck weren't too talkative. I'm thinking tamales you gotta get lucky on. But I'll shoot for the quesadilla next time.
"I'm just not a fan of gobs of greasy melted cheddar cheese."–WTF? I can eat the sole of a shoe with it on it. But I know you're point.
I think Chris may also have a more plentiful taco truck selection. I need to try and pin down where some of them are in Boise. I always know where to find Los Beto's so I often go there by default. I do enjoy their California burrito. Carne asada, potatoes, grilled veggies and cheese, add their red or green salsa and enjoy. Usually not terribly greasy, but all the grease may have simply migrated to the potatoes.
No, I really don't do melted cheddar, I mean, I'm not opposed, I just don't really dig it. My chief complaint about most "Mexican" food restaurants around here is that they smother everything in cheddar and beans.
This is also why I don't dig deep dish pizza.
I'm sure that I do :). But you guys have that fish & chips truck that I really want to check out. Supposed to be really good.
I know exactly what you mean and I'm one of the guys they're targeting. But I seek to avoid it. I certainly don't think its a valid substitute for good Mexican food. For example, if I say I want Mexican and somebody says Cafe Ole, they gets the bitch slapping.
