Fighting Big Government … Canyon County style
Our Vision for the Valley editorial project is built on the premise that community leaders need to work together on common goals — even if it means giving up a little control in the process.
As such, I’ve become a little less patient with parochial squabbling: county vs. county, city vs. city. But I can sympathize with the Ada County officials who accuse their Canyon County colleagues of foot-dragging on vehicle emissions testing.

I know some Canyon County residents think emissions testing represents government intrusion. But this list makes it clear: If we’re going to address air quality, the government is going to be involved in doing it. Any question about that?
You see, some Canyon County residents don’t want to do emissions testing on their jacked up 4×4’s and antiquated vehicles because that equals big government intrusion into their lives. No, the Conservatives that make up a significant portion of Canyon County only want government intrusion when it fits their narrow life view.
- Two people of the same sex want to get married? That’s for the government to decide.
- Drinking on the Lord’s day? That’s for the government to decide.
- Women having freedom over their bodies? That’s for the government to decide.
- Want to make your own decisions about assisted suicide? That’s for the government to decide.
- The list goes on and on…
One of the biggest frustrations that I have with Conservatives is that they continually crow about the intrusion of big government into their lives, and yet they are more than willing to use it to control the lives of others.
God forbid that Canyon County residents have to get emissions testing done on their vehicles — even when more Canyon County residents commute to Ada for work than Ada residents commute to Canyon for pleasure or work combined.
As a longtime Ada County resident who sees 2C cars spewing smoke running around town, I say thank you.
